Anamur Sea Turtle and Trionyx Population Monitoring Project

Anamur, Mersin

Project Details

Overview

Sea turtles are among the flagship species of nature conservation. They are rare and iconic animals that connect the marine and terrestrial environments, and their protection depends on the collective efforts of tens of thousands of volunteers around the world every year. Anamur Beach, with its 12 km long coastline and fine sandy structure, is one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in both Türkiye and the Mediterranean. Sea turtle monitoring and conservation activities are conducted in this protected area under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, together with expert academics. The majority of nests on Anamur Beach are made by Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), while Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are also occasionally recorded. In addition, the protected Nile softshell turtle (Trionyx triunguis) also inhabits the region.

Project Dates

May 15th – September 30th

Who Can Apply?

Anyone who is over 18 years old, physically prepared to walk approximately 12 km per day, capable of following communal living rules, and possesses strong teamwork skills is welcome to apply.

Volunteer Responsibilities

Volunteers actively participate in systematic data collection, applying scientific methods optimized for sea turtle biology to support our research team’s efforts. The fieldwork is structured into two main shifts: the morning shift begins at sunrise, focusing on identifying nests and tracks, collecting nest location data, monitoring hatchling success, and installing protective cages, while the night shift involves observing sea turtles, taking morphometric measurements, and tagging. Beyond these core research duties, volunteers also assist with specific research questions and engage in local public awareness activities. Finally, camp life is a shared experience where responsibilities like cooking and cleaning are managed through a duty roster, but with fieldwork typically concluding by 10:00 AM, there is ample time to rest and explore the beautiful surroundings of Anamur during the day.

Program Fees & Logistics

International volunteers are required to pay a €250 participation fee to join the project, which covers accommodation in communal living areas (shared rooms or tents) and includes two meals per day—breakfast and dinner. While the project provides these essentials, volunteers are responsible for their own lunch and any specific dietary requirements or additional beverages. Throughout the program, participants receive comprehensive, hands-on training in scientific monitoring methods. Please note that travel arrangements to Anamur are the responsibility of the volunteer; the nearest airport is Dalaman, from where private shuttles to the project site are available.

Age Limit

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and in good physical condition (capable of the 12 km daily walk).

Participation Duration

A minimum commitment of 30 days is essential for volunteers to learn the procedures and provide meaningful contributions. During peak application periods, candidates who apply for longer durations may be prioritized.

Transportation

Volunteers are responsible for arranging and covering their own transportation to Anamur. Due to its location, the most practical way to reach Anamur is usually by road. For volunteers who prefer air travel, the nearest airport is Antalya-Gazipaşa Airport. Transportation from Gazipaşa to Anamur is available through private shuttle services.

Certification

Every volunteer who successfully completes the 30-day program in compliance with project rules will receive a Certificate of Participation.
